Join us as we recognize two outstanding citizens who exemplify the traits of the “Hugo Germino Sports Ambassador Award“. The “Hugo Germino Sports Ambassador Award” was established to honor deserving citizens who have spent an exceptional amount of time promoting, coaching, and working with young people in various sporting activities in the Durham community, without recognition.  We feel these individuals deserve credit for taking their time and interest to promote athletics, fun, and happiness for so many people without expecting any pay or personal accolades.

Our guest speaker for this meeting will be Mike Krzyzewski, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Duke University. Krzyzewski will enter the 2018-19 season with a 1,100-338 record in 43 years as a head coach, including a 1,027-279 mark in 38 seasons at Duke. From his first career win as head coach at Army on Nov. 28, 1975, to his 1,100th over Syracuse in the 2018 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, Krzyzewski has set the standard for winning in Division I men’s basketball.

Coach K became the Division I men’s career wins leader on Nov. 15, 2011, at Madison Square Garden, moving past his former coach Bob Knight with his 903rd victory. His historic 1,000th career victory came against St. John’s at The World’s Most Famous Arena on Jan. 25, 2015, as he became the first Division I men’s basketball coach to achieve a four-figure win total.

The crown jewels of Krzyzewski’s tenure at Duke are the five NCAA championship banners that hang in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Coach K’s five national championships are the second-most in NCAA history, trailing only the 10 won by former UCLA coach John Wooden, and he is one of just two coaches since 1975 to lead a team to back-to-back national titles (1991 and 1992).

Krzyzewski and former Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun are the only coaches in NCAA history to win national championships in three different decades.

Our guest speaker for this meeting will be Dwayne Ballen, an award-winning television journalist with more than twenty years of television industry experience. His broadcast resume includes CBS Sports, The ESPN networks, The Golf Channel, Fox Sports, USA Network, and TNT’s NBA Playoffs coverage. He has been a contributor to NPR and the Fox News Channel.

Ballen is also the author of the recently published book, “Journey With Julian”, about his family’s life with his eldest son (Julian) who has autism. Told from the rarely heard father’s perspective, “Journey With Julian” has received praise since its release. A review in the New York Journal of Books says the book will “enlighten and educate” the reader as it “conveys the importance of family, the necessity of acceptance, and the pure joy of unconditional love.”

Ballen, is an award winning television sports journalist and has been recognized for his outstanding skills as an interviewer and anchor. He is host of the upcoming talkshow “Sportsthought” which focuses on the more substantive issues that revolve around sports. Ballen dedicates a good deal of his time to raising awareness about autism. He’s delivered keynote addresses to the Autism Society of America’s annual conference, Clay Aiken’s National Inclusion Project tenth year celebration and the CDC’s national autism awareness day. He travels the country speaking about autism and his family’s experience. He and his son appeared on a special episode of the Katie Couric show, which dealt with autism.

Our guest speaker for this meeting will be Orlando “Tubby” Smith, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at High Point University.  On March 27 of this year, Smith was named as the 12th head men’s basketball coach in HPU history.  He joins the Panthers after serving as the head coach at Memphis for two seasons.  An all-conference standout for High Point College from 1969-73, Smith coached Kentucky to the 1998 national championship and is one of two head coaches to guide five different programs to the NCAA Division I Tournament (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas Tech).

Smith has been named National Coach of the Year three times (2003, 2005, 2016), conference coach of the year six times (1994, 1995, 1998, 2003, 2005, 2016) and was honored with the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award in 2016. In 2000, Smith was an assistant coach on Rudy Tomjanovich’s staff that led the United States to Olympic gold.

Smith has made 20 postseason appearances as a head coach, including nine Sweet Sixteen and four Elite Eight trips. Smith has mentored 18 student-athletes who have gone on to play in the NBA, including 13 NBA draft picks. In 27 seasons at six schools, Smith has amassed a combined record of 597-302 (.664).

The former Panther standout was inducted into the High Point University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2013, Smith was inducted into the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame.

Smith comes to High Point University in a time of great transformation. Since 2005, enrollment has more than tripled and grown from three to eight academic schools. The US. News & World Report ranked HPU the Best College and the Most Innovative College in the South and the Princeton Review included HPU among its Best 382 Colleges in the Nation.

Our Guest Speaker for this week’s meeting will be Jay Smith, history professor at UNC.  Smith is best known for authoring Cheated: The UNC Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports (Potomac Books, 2015) with co-author Mary Willingham, which provides an exposé of the UNC athletic-academic scandal and an assessment of the educational culture fostered in big-time sport programs.

More recently, in 2017, he tried to start a sports history class (History 383) at UNC that would include information about the UNC scandal.  UNC administration intervened and would not allow the course to be taught, a decision that was ultimately reversed and the course was made available this year. Smith says that when he attempted to teach the class during the fall 2017 semester, his efforts were suppressed by administrative forces outside of the history department.

In July 2017, he filed a grievance with the University’s Faculty Grievance Committee, asserting that his academic freedom had been violated.

On April 20, 2018, the Board of Trustees issued the final say in the matter: the University’s administration did not violate Smith’s academic freedom in the case of History 383 being kept off the fall 2017 schedule.

The guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Barry Jacobs, noted freelance sports writer. He has authored five books, 14 basketball annuals, nominations to the National Register, and hundreds of articles on sports, history, and the environment for newspapers (including 20 years for the New York Times), magazines, and the Internet. His books include:

The guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be David Cutcliffe, Head Football Coach at Duke University. the 2013 National Coach of the Year who has earned both ACC and SEC Coach of the Year honors in a distinguished career that includes the mentoring of Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, was named Duke University’s 21st head football coach on December 15, 2007.

Cutcliffe is 52-61 (.460) in nine seasons at Duke and owns an overall head coaching ledger of 96-90 (.603). Cutcliffe’s 52 victories in nine years with the Blue Devils are 42 more than the program’s total in the previous eight seasons (2000-07) combined.

Highlights from the last five years include the program’s first bowl victory since 1961, an NFL first round draft pick pick in Laken Tomlinson (2014), an eight-game winning streak in 2013 (Duke’s longest since 1941), the program’s first appearance in the BCS standings in 2013 and in the College Football Playoff rankings in 2014 and final national rankings in both polls in 2013 (22nd by USA Today/Coaches & 23rd by Associated Press) to mark Duke’s first showing in a final poll since 1962. Cutcliffe directed the 2013 Blue Devils to a school record four fourth quarter victories as well as, for the first time since 1971, two wins over nationally-ranked opponents. A year later, Cutcliffe had Duke as high as No. 19 in both the USA Today and Associated Press polls, its highest AP ranking since November 12, 1994. Duke also won two or more games as a ranked team in consecutive years for the first time since the 1954-55 seasons.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Cutcliffe graduated from the University of Alabama in 1976 and is a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016. He got his start in coaching at Banks High School — his alma mater — and spent four years as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach in 1980.
Cutcliffe is married to the former Karen Oran, and they have four children (Chris, Marcus Hilliard, Katie [Kolls] & Emily), one daughter-in-law (Molly), one son-in-law (Chris Kolls) and six grandsons (Shivers, Bennett, Oliver, Campbell, Theodore & Cooper).

The guest speaker for our upcoming meeting will be Curt Cignetti, Head Football Coach at Elon University. Cignetti was named Elon University’s 22nd head football coach on Dec. 31, 2016. The assistant coach/recruiting coordinator on Nick Saban’s undefeated 2009 National Championship team at Alabama, Cignetti guided the Phoenix to a six-win turnaround and an FCS Playoff appearance in his first season.
Under Cignetti’s leadership, Elon was one of the nation’s most improved teams in 2017. The Phoenix went from 2-9 in 2016 to an 8-4 overall mark in Cignetti’s first season at the helm of the program. Elon, which had been picked to place 11th in the 12-team CAA Football league, posted a 6-2 conference record to finish third. Elon was one of the nation’s most improved teams in 2017. During the 2017 season, Elon returned to the top-25 rankings for the first time since 2010, peaking at No. 7. The maroon and gold defeated four ranked opponents and put together an eight-game winning streak on its way to the program’s first FCS Playoff appearance since 2009.

Cignetti was hired on Nick Saban’s original staff at Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide to a national title in 2009 and back-to-back SEC West championships in 2008 and 2009 as the recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach. He joined the staff at Alabama after spending seven seasons (2000-06) as the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State while also coaching tight ends from 2000-02 and 2005-06 and quarterbacks during the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. NC State qualified for five bowl games during that time, including the 2002 Gator Bowl, when the team set a school record with 11 victories.

Cignetti was a quarterback at West Virginia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1982. He is married to the former Manette Lawer and the couple has three children – Curtis John, Carly Ann and Natalie Elise.
